Bhubaneswar: A constable working in the Special Security Battalion of the Commissionerate Police was thrashed by a girl in full public view for allegedly misbehaving with her in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

The accused constable, identified as Pramod Behera, was detained by police after the incident and subsequently placed under suspension.

According to sources, the incident took place in the heart of the capital city this afternoon while the girl along with two of her friends was on her way to Kalpana Square from Rajmahal. The accused misbehaved with her and tried to touch her inappropriately. As the girl raised an alarm, the locals caught hold of the accused who was later found to be in an inebriated condition.

Subsequently, the girl gave a sound thrashing in presence of  a huge crowd surrounding the area. A video of the incident showed the girl kicking and slapping the accused on his face and beating him with her slippers.

“The accused in an inebriated condition was stalking the girl and misbehaving with her when some locals caught hold of him on the spot. The girl then thrashed him,” said a local.

“Police will take action as per law, but he deserves immediate punishment,” added the local.

On being informed about the incident, Capital police rushed to the spot and took the accused into custody.

Meanwhile the incident which has seemed to defy the tall claims of the Commissionerate police to reduce cases of misbehaviour and harassment of women and girls with zero tolerance against eve teasers and road romeos.

This is not an isolated incident of involvement of cop in crime. Recently, a police official was arrested for allegedly raping a woman in Nayapalli area in the city. Similarly, Mahila police had arrested a constable of Special Security Battalion for betraying a girl on pretext of marriage.

Speaking about the incident, former DGP Bipin Bihari Mishra said, “I am happy to hear that the woman caught the accused, thrashed him and handed him over to police. The accused should be given strong punishment by the department.”
