Cuttack: The district administration on Thursday started the second phase of its two-day slum eviction drive in Nuasahi area near Petanal. To avoid any untoward incident, the administration deployed nine platoons of police on the spot. According to reports, the demolition squad has so far able to demolish 15 shanties.
During the first phase of its drive on June 12 and 13, it had demolished as many as 70 shanties in the area but the drive turned violent after 15 persons got injured in a clash with the squad. The residents of Nua Sahi slum at Abhinav Bidanasi resisted the drive by setting up blockades and pelting stones at the police, who resorted to a lathi-charge. In the melee 15 persons were injured.
The local administration claimed that the eviction drive is underway following the directions of the High Court.
