Malkangiri/Bhubaneswar: The slained sub-inspector Krushna Chandra Rath was today given the customary gun salute by the Malkangiri district police. The sub-inspector Krushna Chandra Rath, posted at Khairiput police station, was gunned down by suspected Maoists on Thursday in broad-day light. Top brass of the police department including the Inspector General (Operations) Y B Khurania attended the ceremonial gun salute. The body has been sent to Krushna Chandra Rath`s native place in Nawarangpur. 

The IG (Opearations) Y B Khurania said that the killers of Krushna Chandra Rath would be definitely taken to task. The killing took place despite ceasefire declaration by top naxal leader Sabyasachi Panda after the abduction of two Italian tourists to facilitate dialogue with the government to free the hostages.

The Maoist ultras had on January 5, 2012 killed three policemen in a landmine blast in Kandhamal district. Fourteen security personnel were killed by ultras in 2011 while the number stood at 17 in 2010.
