Sambalpur: One girl went missing and five others were rescued after being swept away by water on the banks of Mahanadi river in Sambalpur on Sunday.

As per reports, while taking bath a girl slipped and fell into the river following which some other girls present near the spot attempted to rescue her but they also drowned. After hearing screams, some locals rushed to the spot and rescued five girls, however, one of them could not be traced.

Following the incident, a rescue operation was launched by Fire Services personnel to trace the missing girl.

All the rescued girls are said to be residents of Dhobapada and Sahibangla area of the district.

"In an attempt to rescue one girl, four to five girls went into the river following which they also drowned. Later, some people rescued them," said an eyewitness.
