Sambalpur: Not less than a week after the ash pond of Hindalco thermal power plant here breached resulting damage to the standing crops of the nearby agricultural fields, the ash pond of Shyam DRI power plant developed a crack on Tuesday.

According to information received, the ash mixed water flowed into Hirakud dam as well as the nearby agricultural farms of Nishanbhanga village.  The full extent of damage to crops, however is yet to be ascertained.

Following Hindalco’s ash pond breach on last Thursday, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) directed the company to shut down four units of its captive power plant.
