The Block Education Officer (BEO) of Harabhanga in Odisha’s Boudh district has taken disciplinary action against 10 teachers for alleged negligence, issuing show-cause notices and withholding one day’s salary. The action came after BEO Hadibandhu Behera conducted surprise inspections across several schools in the block without prior notice.
According to reports, the BEO found multiple instances of dereliction of duty across eight schools. Several teachers were absent without authorised leave, while others had left the premises before school hours ended without informing authorities. The inspection also revealed negligence during examinations, as stated in the official communication.
Further Irregularities Reported
Sources said that some teachers had remained absent without prior intimation, while a few left early without informing school heads. In some instances, teachers were reportedly not teaching students properly. Following these findings, show-cause notices were issued to all 10 teachers, and their one-day salary was withheld. The move has sparked discussion in the region, with many viewing it as an attempt to reinforce accountability among teaching staff.
Questions Over School Leadership
Reports further indicate that several complaints against the teachers had been submitted earlier, but the previously appointed BEO allegedly failed to act on them, leading to disciplinary proceedings against the former officer as well. Questions have also been raised about the roles of the concerned Headmasters and Headmistresses, with allegations that school authorities were aware of the misconduct but remained silent.
The BEO’s intervention has renewed focus on the need for strict monitoring, adherence to academic responsibilities, and improved oversight within schools in the Harabhanga block, sources said.
