Mayurbhanj: At a time when educational institutions and other establishments were dipped in Saraswati Puja celebrations, a class VIII girl student was subjected to sexual assault by a minor boy inside the toilet of her school under Sadar police limits of the district.

Though the incident happened on Sunday, the matter came to fore after the minor girl narrated the ordeal before her family members the next day. The girl's family has filed a complaint with the Sadar police demanding stringent action against the accused.

As per the allegations, the girl was inside the school bathroom when the minor boy, a Class X student of another school, jumped the fence and barged inside. The boy then raped her in the bathroom, the family alleged.

Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter. The girl was also taken for a medical examination later.

Sadar police station IIC, Swarnalata Minz said, "The incident occurred on Saraswati Puja and the girl’s aunt lodged a complaint at Sadar Police Station alleging that the girl was sexually assaulted by a boy. A case has been registered under Sections 341, 376 (3), 506 IPC and POCSO Act."

The number of sexual assaults has surged over the past few months, and this incident once again raised concerns over the safety and security of girl students in schools across the State.

A few days ago, a Class VI girl student of an ashram school under Morada block in Mayurbhanj district was found pregnant after she was admitted to Baripada medical college and hospital. Reports claimed that the girl was allegedly raped by her classmate, who also happens to be a minor.
