Bhubaneswar: To deal with the rising medico legal cases (MLCs) in Odisha, especially in the state capital, the State Forensic Laboratory (SFL) here would soon have DNA testing facilities. This was informed by DGP Prakash Mishra on the sidelines of the 61st Police Duty Meet in Cuttack on Thursday.

Inaugurating the meet, the top cop said that the SFL would be revamped with all modern scientific facilities. He said in view of increase in MLCs, the SFL would have its own DNA testing laboratory. The DGP further added that SFL facilities which are now available only in Bhubaneswar would be provided at district levels.

The move was ostensibly prompted by inordinate delays in getting reports in a number of recent high profile cases in which the investigating officials had to depend on laboratories outside the state, sources said. Presently the state police have no facility for DNA testing and DNA fingerprinting and the samples are being sent outside the State like to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Kolkata for DNA tests.

“Once operational, the laboratory will reduce the waiting time (for reports) of the police,” said a senior official.

Besides, the project will be most beneficial to resolve cases relating to murder, rape, paternity, maternity, child swapping, body identification, kidney transplantation etc.

In 2012, the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad has established a DNA Laboratory in the premises of Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar.
