An intense cold wave accompanied by dense fog gripped Odisha on Saturday morning, as large parts of interior and western Odisha have recorded sharp drops in minimum temperatures. The winter conditions are expected to persist across the state for at least another week, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the weather department, minimum temperatures dipped below 10 degrees Celsius in at least eight cities on Friday night. During this period, Koraput recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 4.8 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest location so far this season.

Daringbadi followed at 6.5 degrees, while Jharsuguda recorded 7.2 degrees and Phulbani 7.5 degrees Celsius. Rourkela logged a minimum of 8 degrees, Nabarangpur 8.5 degrees, Sundargarh 9 degrees, and Bhawanipatna 9.8 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the night temperature in Bhubaneswar stood at 14.6 degrees Celsius, while Cuttack recorded 12.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday night.

Cold Wave To Persist For Another Week

The IMD indicated that there is no immediate relief in sight. The prevailing cold conditions are expected to continue for the next several days, with night temperatures likely to remain largely unchanged in the short term.

The IMD’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar said the state will continue to experience cold conditions as there will be no major variation in minimum temperatures over the next four days. It added that a gradual rise in night temperatures is expected only after this period.

Dense Fog Triggers Yellow Warning

The IMD has issued yellow warnings for several districts, including Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Khurda, Dhenkanal, and Koraput, warning of dense fog. Shallow to moderate fog is expected to occur in isolated pockets across multiple districts during morning hours over the next five days.

Similar warnings have also been extended for Sunday morning for Kandhamal, Koraput, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, and Khordha districts.
