Bhubaneswar: With the State Election Commission seeking new dates for holding elections in 25 urban local bodies in western districts of the state, Odisha government on Wednesday asked the concerned district authorities to report on the prevailing situation in their respective jurisdictions.

The SEC in a letter to the Chief Secretary wanted the state government's views on holding ULB elections in western Odisha where the process could not be conducted on September 19 in view of the lawyers agitation.

"We will consider all aspects before going to polls. We have asked the district collectors for reports on conducting elections in the 25 ULBs of nine districts," departmental minister Devi Prasad Mishra said.

The Central Action Committee (CAC) of lawyers in western Odisha has said it will organize a meeting and discuss the issue.

Meanwhile, the government offices resumed functioning in the nine districts from Tuesday after almost one and a half months due to the prolonged agitations by the lawyers of the region demanding a permanent High Court bench.
