Bhubaneswar: The state election commission (SEC) on Saturday postponed election to the posts of vice chairpersons (VCs) of 16 notified area councils (NACs) in Ganjam district and deputy mayor in the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) to November 5 due to Cyclone Phailin.

Notably, the election of vice chairmen for 17 NACs and deputy mayor for Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the district were scheduled to be on October 22.

“As district magistrate and other officials are busy in restoration work and distribution of relief materials to cyclone victims, it would not be possible for them to conduct the polls. We took the decision to defer the polls on the basis of a report from the district collector,” said Ajit Tripathy, SEC.

However, other urban local bodies (ULBs), where elections were held on September 19, will elect their vice-chairmen on October 22 as per the schedule.

Sources said the election of Corporators to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation is likely to be delayed as the Election Officer, Bhubaneswar, informed the SEC that it would finalise voters’ list by November 15. Earlier the date for finalisation of voters’ list was fixed on October 31.

The term of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation is ending on December 10, sources added.
