Sculptures From Scrap Give Berhampur Landscape A Makeover

Berhampur: The landscape of Berhampur city has got an unlikely makeover - now dotted with sculptures which have assumed their shape from unlikelier materials.

Scrap materials have been fabricated into some truly artistic creations & these installations by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC), have not only enhanced the aesthetics of the city, but also are doing their bit to create awareness on environment preservation.

Various sculptures like animal replicas and Buddha statue constructed using discarded materials including nuts, bolts, spare parts, sheet metal and iron rods have been placed at multiple locations between Engineering School Chhak to First Gate area of the city. To give these scrap pieces such artistic significance, local sculptors and many artists from outside the state were engaged.

"We created the sculptures from discarded materials that we collected from Berhampur city," a designer, Dibya Singh Swain, said.

Another artist Pratap Maharana said, "We first make a frame and then attach scrapped parts of two wheelers and four-wheelers and discarded iron pieces."

The sculptures set up by the BeMC at different locations, in a bid to create awareness on preservation of environment, have received a good response from the local residents of Berhampur.

"It is a great move by the BeMC authorities, who set up these sculptures at several places in the city," a local resident Sanatan Sahu said.

BeMC Commissioner Chakraborty Singh Rathore said," Most of the raw materials were brought from different scrap dealers of Berhampur. Only 2 to 3 per cent materials were brought from Bhubaneswar."

Rathore added that each of the sculptures carry a message about environment conservation.
