A disturbing incident has come to light in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, where a minor girl was allegedly raped while on her way to school in the Jamankira police station area on Saturday.

The accused has been identified as Ameer Qureshi, a resident of the same locality. He has been detained by the Jamankira police and is currently being interrogated in connection with the case.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred when the victim was heading to school. The accused reportedly approached her, offering various inducements, and persuaded her to accompany him.

He then allegedly took the girl in his car to an isolated spot in neighbouring Deogarh district, where he committed the heinous crime. After the assault, he reportedly dropped the girl near her home before fleeing the scene.

The traumatised victim narrated the ordeal to her family, following which they immediately lodged a complaint with the Jamankira police. Acting on the report, officers swiftly registered a case, initiated an investigation, and detained the accused. The car used in the crime has also been seized as evidence. Police sources confirmed that Qureshi is being questioned to gather further details about the sequence of events and any possible accomplices.

While the investigation is underway, no official statement has yet been released by the police regarding the incident. The case has sparked outrage in the local community, which is demanding stringent action against the perpetrator and increased safety measures for school-going children.
