Cuttack: In a major relief to the ashram-goers of Anant Gopal shrine here, the Supreme Court on Friday stayed the demolition of the religious structure.

The court’s decision came following a petition urging the apex court to put a stay on the ongoing eviction drive of the district administration.

Hearing the petition filed by Anant Gopal Bhakta Samaj Seva Sangathan, the SC said that physical structure of the shrine should remain intact until next hearing. The apex court has also issued notice to the district administration and the state government in this regard.

On the other hand, the eviction exercise of illegal religious structures continued in other parts of the millennium city which witnessed the razing of Tarini temple and Trinath temple near Chauliganj police station on Friday morning.

Despite protests from the devotees, the officials engaged in the drive have so far pulled down as many as 22 religious structures in the city which had come up encroaching government lands. These structures have reportedly usurped 50 acres of land.

Meanwhile, the illegal temple demolition heat has reached Sambalpur town where the district administration after taking a cue from their Cuttack counterparts today demolished the Kali temple near Remed square. The temple was built illegally on government land.

Officials said, on day one, the move was undertaken from Ainthapali chhak to Remed square.

The anti-encroachment team however plans to continue the drive in the coming days.
