Bhubaneswar: Senior IPS officer Satyajit Mohanty on Thursday assumed charge as the interim Director General of Police (DGP) after the sacking of State police chief BK Sharma in a dramatic reshuffle of State's top police officials yesterday.

Mohanty, a former police commissioner of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, who has been posted as director of intelligence, will remain in-charge of the top cop post until newly-appointed 1986 batch IPS Abhay joins the office as the DGP.

“I am grateful to the government for showing trust in me. As I have to work as the interim chief till the new DGP joins, I will make all efforts in close cooperation with other officials to maintain law and order situation in the State,” Mohanty said after assuming the office.

Notably, the Odisha government in a major reshuffle last night appointed 1986 batch IPS officer Abhay as DGP replacing BK Sharma just hours after a high level panel was constituted to probe allegations of irregularities against the latter. Sharma has been given charge as OSD of Home Department. Similarly, Sunil Ray has been appointed as the director of fire services and home guard.
