A wedding celebration in Bhubaneswar took an unfortunate turn after thieves allegedly stole a large sum of money from a wedding mandap. The incident occurred while the bride’s sangeet ceremony was underway, a time when guests were engrossed in music and festivities, providing an opportunity for the theft.
According to the complaint, the accused entered the venue posing as members of the wedding procession. Blending in seamlessly with other guests, they allegedly stole a bag containing the bride’s gift money. The bag reportedly held Rs 3.5 lakh in cash.
Swift Escape in Car
After committing the theft, the thief and his accomplice reportedly fled the spot in a car. The family became aware of the incident only after the money was found missing, causing panic and distress at the venue.

Pattern of Organised Theft Emerges
As per the police investigation, a technically organised gang is suspected to be behind the theft. Police said six similar incidents have been recorded over the past year, notably in Puri. The gang is believed to be from outside the state and is known to attend weddings in traditional, stylish attire. They operate in phases, arriving individually rather than in groups, and target moments when people are distracted.
Police Begin Investigation
Following the incident, the bride’s family lodged a complaint with Nayapalli Police. Police have initiated an investigation and are examining CCTV footage to identify the accused.
The incident has raised questions about public awareness and vigilance during large social gatherings, with police urging people to remain cautious and ensure the safety of valuables even amid celebrations.
