Jajpur: The Assistant Sessions Judge here on Friday sentenced Sanjay Nayak, convicted for an attempt to murder trade union leader Samrat Gupta, to a five-year jail term.

Gupta, a close aide of former Odisha Finance minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadei, was grievously injured when a miscreant shot at him in Kaliapani chromite valley area in 2010.

The incident had occurred when Gupta, along with his supporters, was returning home on his vehicle after attending a trade union meeting in Kaliapani. A motorcycle-borne youth opened fire at him from close range. Gupta took the bullet in his neck.

Gupta, one of the accused in the sensational murder of trade union leader Shyamapada Rout in the early 1990s, had been spearheading the trade union movement in the chromites valley area for the last several years.
