Rourkela: Coke Ovens collective of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has carried out a challenging job of modifying the Reversible Apron Feeder (RAF) of the Wagon Tipplers.

This has led to drastic reduction in RAF related breakdowns and substantial financial savings, RSP sources said today. It is noteworthy that, coal from the bunker is conveyed by apron pans laid adjacent to each other. It was observed that while RAF was in operation, sometimes the roller links used to come out thus disturbing the apron pan leading to displacement of other apron pans thereby resulting in breakdown, disruption of production and spillage of material.

The Coke Ovens collective deliberated on the idea to prevent this problem and decided to install a new mechanism. As per this when the pan gets displaced, it strikes and activates the lever of either of the limit switches, thus stalling the operation. Thus preventive actions can be undertaken and operation can be revived without much delay.

This modifications has led to many benefits including improvement in productivity, quality, power savings, safety of man and machine and equipment, health of equipment and improved working conditions, sources said. Moreover, one time saving of about Rs 31 lakh and a recurring saving of about Rs 60 lakh per annum has been envisaged as a result of this innovation.
