Rs 2.5 crore corruption: After months on the run, Odisha govt clerk nabbed by Vigilance

The hide-and-seek game lasting over three and a half months finally ended on Tuesday with Odisha Vigilance arresting Subrat Behera, a clerk of Angul District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). He had been absconding in connection with a major financial misappropriation case.

According to sources, Subrat had gone missing after a case was registered against him for alleged financial irregularities while he was serving as an accountant at the hospital. He is accused of manipulating records to unlawfully increase his salary and misappropriating close to Rs 2.5 crore of government funds.

The alleged embezzlement came to light following an internal audit, after which the hospital authorities had lodged a formal complaint. Soon after the case was registered, Subrat had reportedly fled to evade arrest and remained untraceable for nearly three and a half months.

Following sustained efforts, Vigilance officials finally managed to trace and apprehend him. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the financial irregularities and to identify whether others were involved in the scam.

However, no comments were received from the Vigilance wing in this regard.

Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, the Odisha Vigilance wing had taken strict action against three government officials in two separate cases of funds embezzlement and bribery on September 23 last year.
