Jatani: Gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees were looted by robbers, who dug a 2-feet tunnel through a roadside drain to break into the Gold Plaza jewellery shop in Raja Bazar of Jatani yesterday.

Police investigating the case with the help of a scientific team and sniffer dogs  have recovered a digging bar, hammer and a 'gamccha' from the spot. According to sources, the CCTV cameras at the jewellery shop were defunct when the robbery was executed.

While investigating the case, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anup Sahu assured that the robbers will be arrested soon.

“The robbers dug a small tunnel and removed the tiles to get access to the shop. The CCTV has not been working for the last 2 days and hence the incident could not be recorded. The total amount of the gold has not been assessed yet. Investigation is on and the robbers will be arrested soon,” said Sahu.

Owner of Gold Plaza Mahesh Kumar Santada said, "Today morning around 8:30 am, the security guards found jewellery boxes inside the shop scattered here and there. They informed the manager, who in turn informed me about the incident. Later I called up the police to register a case.”

“This almost looks impossible. I wonder how the looters could dig a tunnel at this place but the crime has been executed and we are surprised how this happened,” another local gold trader Rakesh Agarwal said.
