Cuttack: A robber in Cuttack had to face public wrath after he picked a 'wrong target' during a chain snatching bid on Monday. The victim he targeted turned out to be a lady constable of Malgodown Police Station here.

According to sources, the incident took place in the morning near Durga Chhak in Zobra area when Gitanjali Jena, the constable was on her way to the police station. Jena became the unwitting target of the bike-borne miscreant, who followed her and intercepted her near Durga Chhak and attempted to snatch her gold chain.

However, the lady cop somehow caught hold of the chain snatcher while he was trying to flee the scene. Soon the passersby gathered at the spot after Jena raised an alarm. They nabbed the chain snatcher and thrashed him before handing him over to police.

"The miscreant intercepted my scooter and tried to snatch away my chain, but I managed to grab his hand while he was trying to escape from the scene. Soon the local residents rushed the spot and captured him. I immediately informed local police who reached the spot and detained him," Gitanjali said.

Meanwhile, Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh suspended the lady constable on charges of giving bytes to media persons.
