Bhubaneswar: The soaring onion prices are bringing tears to common man. Being sold at more than Rs 50 a kg, it is currently pushing people to do away with the vegetable.

Attributing the steep price rise to scarce supply from Nasik and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the wholesale markets from where the maximum requirement of Odisha is sourced, a wholesaler Sudhakar Swain said the price of onion will continue to rise till new crops reach the market.

"We are currently buying onion at Rs 50 and it seems to rise in the coming days. Buying of onion is hurting us, but we have no choice," said a consumer, Bhagbat Sahu.

Onion price is too high now. Government should take measures like import of the vegetable from other states to restore the price, said another consumer, Niranjan Sahoo.
