Bhubaneswar: Following the demands of the legislators cutting across party lines, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Surya Narayan Patro today informed the state Assembly that the crop losses occurred due to unpredicted hailstorm in many of the coastal districts are being assessed and the next course of action would be taken according to the assessment report.

The minister told the House that at least eight people were killed due to lightning during the Wednesday calamity.  Four persons were struck by lightning from Jagatsinghpur district while it claimed three lives from Kendrapara and one from Balasore district. The minister announced Rs 1.5 lakh compensation from the Chief Minister’s relief fund to the family of the victims.

On the other hand, the opposition members dubbed the Minister’s assessment wrong and demanded a fair review of the losses.

Opposition chief whip Prasad Harichandan yesterday raised the issue of crop loss due to unseasonal rain in the House during zero hour. He said the disaster caused massive crop losses in at least 11 districts of the state. Harichandan demanded emergency relief to the affected farmers and also requested the Speaker to direct the minister concerned for a statement on the matter in House.

Taking serious note on the plight of the farmers, Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat directed the Revenue Minister on Thursday to make an assessment of the situation and present it in the House by Friday.
