Protest over Pension Photograph: (OTV)
In a growing sign of frustration, nearly 20 retired employees staged a sit-in protest in front of the Kuchinda NAC office in Sambalpur district, demanding immediate release of their long-pending pensions. The demonstrators, who had served in various capacities, alleged that although they worked for years and were paid regular salaries, they have been unfairly deprived of pension benefits after retirement.
Protestors Demand Pension Rights
The retired staff stated that despite submitting all necessary documents and making multiple appeals, their pension claims remain unresolved. Many of them expressed distress over the financial hardships they face due to the prolonged delay. They emphasised that pension is not a favour but a rightful entitlement earned through years of service.
“If all calculations are taken into account, the amount comes to nearly Rs 10 crore. It is not possible for us to disburse such a large sum from our own funds. We have already informed the department about this. Whatever the higher-level committee decides, and whatever directions we receive from the Odisha Government, we will act accordingly,” said Manoranjan Suna, Executive Officer, Kuchinda.
Warning of Relay Agitation
Frustrated by the lack of response, the protestors warned that they would continue their agitation in relay until their demands are fulfilled. They urged authorities to intervene immediately and ensure that retired employees receive the pension they are legally owed.
The protest highlights the administrative gaps affecting pension disbursement and the plight of retired workers relying on these benefits for survival. With the sit-in intensifying, the onus now lies on the concerned authorities to address the grievances and restore justice to the affected employees.
