Rescued woman fears for safety

Cuttack: A woman who was rescued from the Mahanadi river barrage here three months ago in a critical condition, has now fully recovered in hospital, but is refusing to leave fearing for her safety. "The team of doctors treating the patient has recommended her discharge, but since the patient is refusing to leave, we will bring this to the notice of the district administration," SCB Medical College and Hospital Medical Officer B N Moharana said today.

Mini Pradhan, who claims to have married the son of a former judge and was rescued with her hands and legs bound and with multiple injuries and fractures after being kidnapped by contract killers, said that she had nowhere to go and the state government should do something for her safety.

The police after investigating the incident established that the judge`s family engaged contract killers for Rs 3.5 lakhs. At least nine persons were arrested, including the former judge, his wife and their advocate son, besides four contract killers. While the judge`s family was behind bars after their arrest in May this year, Mini claimed that there was always a threat on her life from them.

"When they could arrange to kidnap me and almost killed me, they could go to any extent to eliminate me for they are determined to marry off their son," Mini said from her hospital bed. Seeking government help for her rehabilitation and shelter, Mini said she could not go back to her stepmother or to any other relative?s house as nobody was prepared to invite the ire of the judge`s family.
