Bhubaneswar: Ruins of an ancient temple have been discovered in Sone River near Ajodhya village under Nilagiri block of Balasore district.

According to sources, fishermen came across the remnants of the temple while they were fishing under Kathapal bridge.

From preliminary inspection, the remnants are found to be built of stone, bricks and lime, sources said.

Locals claimed that the site was earlier occupied by human settlements. However, due to change in course of the river, the area was gradually submerged under the water.

Although the history of the ancient temple is yet to be ascertained, locals have urged archaeologists to excavate the site for more research and findings of vintage antiquities.

“The administration should conduct a survey through experts of the State Archaeology Department so that exact history of the ancient civilisation would come to light. It should also take necessary steps to preserve such antique items,” said Sanjay Kumar Jena, a villager.
