Religious conversion slur against ‘tainted’ shelter home to be probed: Odisha Minister

Baripada/Berhampur/Sundergarh: Amid allegations of religious conversion being carried out by the Beltikiri shelter home owner, who was arrested for sexually harassing inmates, Odisha Women and Child Development minister Prafulla Samal today said that probe will be launched if such accusations have surfaced.

The allegations surfaced after a video showing an act purportedly that of religious conversion of inmates by the owner of Dream Centre Shelter Home, Fayaz Rahman went viral on social media.

Minister Prafulla Samal said that “If allegations of religious conversions are found; it will be investigated and strict action will be taken.”

BJP state secretary, Lekhashree Samantasinghar questioned “Despite the presence of strong anti-conversion laws in the state, how come such institutions crop up in large numbers in the state.”

Mahila Congress president, Sumitra Jena said “These organisations are indulging in religious conversions for sure. We demand the resignation of Minister Prafulla Samal else we will organise a massive protest.”
Meanwhile, Rahman, who was arrested by Dhenkanal police on charges of sexual harassment of girl inmates of the shelter home, was taken on a two-day remand today.

On the other hand, the administration continued raids over shelter homes located in other districts. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Odisha Police today vacated two shelter homes – one in Chuliapasi in Udala (Mayurbhanj) and other in Chhatrapur (Ganjam), sources said.

According to sources, 144 inmates who were residing in Chhatrapur shelter home have been relocated to Berhampur CWC office. Other shelter homes in the district are also being raided by the administration. The officials raided various shelter homes in Rourkela too.

Following the Dhenkanal shelter home shame, a team of BJP Mahila Morcha visited a boarding school run by Good News India in Saraswatipur in Remuna block of Balasore district. Similarly, another BJP Mahila Morcha team visited the Dream Centre Shelter Home located in Nandapur village in Tihidi block in Bhadrak.
