Bhubaneswar: A day after a six-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Jatni area, the Commissionerate Police today said the case has been tagged as a ‘Red Flag’ case.

Twin City Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty informed that the investigation will be expedited so that the accused gets stringent punishment at the earliest.

“An Additional DCP rank officer has been entrusted to probe the case. Besides, Additional CP has been asked to monitor the entire investigation,” Mohanty said.

The forensic team and other experts have visited the spot and will conduct DNA profiling of the victim. Officials of the district forensic laboratory also collected samples as part of the investigation, the Police Commissioner added.

On a query whether the case will be handed over to the Crime Branch, Mohanty said no such decision has been taken yet. “The Commissionerate Police will investigate the case properly,” he added

It is pertinent to mention that one accused has been arrested so far in connection with the case while another person was taken into police custody for thrashing the victim’s father while he had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint.

Earlier, the rape and murder of the minor girl had triggered public outrage with locals staging a demonstration in Khurda yesterday. Moreover, BJP leaders targetted Odisha CM for deteriorating law and order and rise in cases of rape of minor girls in the State.
