The US health team and other experts will hold deliberations with student doctors and researchers on various innovative technologies for diagnosis, treatment of Anthrax which claims several lives of people across the globe every year.

The new real-time PCR diagnosis system will be helpful in fast detection of the serious bacterial disease, Anthrax which is particularly prevalent in herbivorous animals.

Anthrax is caused by bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis, which is found naturally in soil. Animals are mainly infected by it when they come in contact with contaminated soil, plants, or water which contains the bacteria.

In Odisha, Anthrax is widespread in Koraput and Sambalpur district, so with the new facility coming up in Bhubaneswar, now the testing of suspected patients can be done with ease in the State. Earlier, people of Odisha used to depend on diagnostic centres outside of the state.

“In animals sometimes detecting the diseases by symptoms become difficult. For example, if there is bleeding from nose, then we can collect blood or a tissue and use the new technology to detect if it has Anthrax ,” said Dr. Niranjan Sahu, co-ordinator Centre of Wildlife, OUAT.
