Rayagada/Sambalpur: The district police today foiled an attack bid by the left wing ultras and seized huge quantities of arms and ammunition from the Phulbani border while the Sambalpur police has arrested one hardcore Maoist from Jharkhand and three of his accomplices in two separate operations in the state.

The Rayagada police, acting on information provided by a surrendered ultra, conducted raids in the dense Sitagudi forest under Chandrapur block bordering Phulbani. The security personnel stumled upon the large quantity of arms and ammunition including 15 powerful landmines weighing five kilogram each. The seizures also included six pressure bombs, 14 country-made guns, 17 detonators, six bundles of wire, six gun barrel and over 150 live catridges. Sources said that the arms and ammunition were hidden under the ground by rebels as advised by top naxal leader Azad.

Likewise, in Sambalpur district, a hardcore Maoist from neighbouring Jharkhand identified as Ranbir Jharna from Anka Gurubeda of Khumti district was nabbed by a police searching party when he was in the town for purchasing materials for the naxalites. Police said that Jharna was involved in imparting arms training to rebels in Saranda forests.

The police too has arrested three of his accomplices, Mangalu Munda, Basant Harenz and Durga Topno. They were picked up from a rented house which was used as a transit house for the rebels, police said. Ranbir Jharna and his three associates were involved in offences like torching of the ARSS construction company plant. The three accomplices provided logistic support to the Maoists, the police added.
