Ravenshaw students protest demanding direct elections
Cuttack: Students of Ravenshaw University staged protests in the university campus demanding direct elections. However, the university Vice Chancellor said that the elections will be conducted as per the new model.
According to sources, the elections will be held in the university as per the previous year format. In this format, two representatives will be selected from each class and they will vote for the various student council posts of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Joint Secretary.
“The administration is not in favour of direct elections while we are for it. As the election is for the students, the students should decide the format of the election. If they (university administration) go ahead with the new format, we will get together and conduct our own elections,” protesting student leader Chinmaya Sahoo said.
Reacting to the students’ demands, Vice Chancellor of Ravenshaw University, Ishan Patra said “We will give full-year representation to the elected council members. There should not be any doubts about it. Some students will never be happy and we cannot make everyone happy.”
