Ravenshaw students call off stir

Cuttack: Following an assurance from Ravenshaw University authorities that police would be asked to initiate action against those who vandalised properties and attacked some inmates of a hostel, the striking students of the hostel on Tuesday called off their three-day `dharna`.

Alleging inaction on the part of varsity authorities by not taking proper measures to ensure their safety in the hostels, the inmates were sitting on a dharna in front of the office of the Registrar since Sunday.

According to reports, some non-students had barged into the East Hostel inside the University campus on Saturday night and beat up some inmates after ransacking the hostel. However, the authorities termed it as yet another fracas between two rival groups.

However, when striking students claimed that the youths who were involved in Saturday`s incident were non-students and occupying the hostel illegally, the authorities promised those persons would be removed from the hostels soon.
