In a rare and lucrative catch, a fisherman netted 90 giant ‘Telia Bhola’ fish on Sunday morning while fishing at the mouth of the Bay of Bengal near Digha, along the Odisha–West Bengal border.
According to reports, each fish weighed between 30 and 35 kilograms, and the entire catch was auctioned for nearly ₹1 crore. A large crowd of locals and tourists gathered at the Digha fish market to witness the extraordinary haul.
Sources said that a pharmaceutical company from Kolkata purchased all 90 fish due to their high medicinal and commercial value. The oil and other body parts of the Telia Bhola fish are used in the manufacture of life-saving medicines, and the species is also exported abroad.
Experts noted that the Telia Bhola is usually found in deep-sea waters and rarely caught near the seamount. The fish’s value is determined by its gender, size, and weight.
