Rainfall likely in Odisha; collectors asked to take precautions to protect crops

Bhubaneswar: The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has forecast rainfall on December 16 and 17 across various districts of the State after the low pressure formed over Bay of Bengal turned into a depression today.

According to the meteorological department, the depression is located around 1,150 kilometers off Chennai coast. It will intensify in the next 12 hours and is predicted to turn into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. It will touch the Andhra-Tamil Nadu coastline in the next 72 hours.

On account of the same, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has predicted rainfall in various districts including Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam.

Keeping in view the rain forecast, the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has written to the district collectors asking them to take measures so that crops are protected.

Farmers have been instructed to take the harvested paddy to safe places while keeping the paddy storage yards covered. It has issued warning to fishermen to prevent them from venturing into deep sea.

Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, HR Biswas said “Odisha in likely to receive light to moderate rainfall in a few places in southern and interior regions.”
