Khurda: The Railway Police Sunday busted a gang of inter-state mobile phone thieves and arrested three persons including two women at Khurda Road railway station.

One of the arrested has been identified as Debraj Singh while the identity of the other two is yet to be revealed. All the three are residents of Purulia in West Bengal, police sources said, adding, 33 cell phones and Rs 14,000 have been recovered from their possession.

In a swift action, a joint team of Railway Police Force and the sleuths of Task Force (STF) nabbed the trio while it was trying to flee after stealing a purse and mobile phone from a woman at Khurda Road railway station, reports said.

During interrogation, Debraj confessed to have committed such crimes and revealed that the members of the gang reside at Talabania area in Puri district. He further stated that they live on roadside and are nomads and used to bury the mobile phones by wrapping them in polythenes.

“They came here from Kolkata and have been involved in different crimes in trains. The men are engaged in looting mobile phones while their wives hide and guard those stolen cellphones,” informed Santosh Kumar Bahinipati, officer of Khurda Railway Police.
