Indian Railways has cleared the final location survey for establishing a coach maintenance facility at Golanthara, close to Berhampur station in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

Once the proposed unit becomes operational, several trains will start and end their journeys at Berhampur station, boosting its role in regional rail operations, The Times of India reported.

The Railway Board recently approved the survey for setting up the facility at Golanthara station, situated around 10 km from Berhampur.

‘It Will Strengthen Railway Operational Capacity’

The move is seen as a long-term measure to strengthen railway operational capacity in southern Odisha.

According to a local resident, the upcoming facility will act as a satellite coaching depot and help reduce congestion at Berhampur and create the required space for smoother train movement.

The project will also spur development around the station area, said another local.

Meanwhile, the proposed depot is likely to ease congestion at the Berhampur yard and enhance operational flexibility. 

It will enable the introduction of more originating and terminating trains in the future, improve maintenance standards to ensure better passenger safety, enhance punctuality through efficient rake handling and faster turnaround, and cut down on unnecessary empty rake movements.
