Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high on the premises of Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and Sum hospital , a privately-run medical college under the Siksha O Anusandhan (SOA) university here after scores of students went on a rampage and ransacked the college after a body of a medical student found hanging in his hostel room in the afternoon today.

According to sources, the deceased has been identified as Manish Dhal, a first year MBBS student in the city-based college. Irate over the incident, the students gheraoed vice-chancellor of the university Amit Banarjee and demanded his resignation, sources added.

Following the incident, police and a scientific team rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. But when the tension intensified, the university authorities declared the college sine die and asked the students to vacate hostels immediately. Meanwhile two platoons of police force have been deployed in the college.

“He has committed suicide as he was denied to sit in the examination due to shortage of attendance”, friends of the deceased alleged.

Meanwhile, Manish’s father brought the same allegation and said the vice chancellor is responsible for his son’s death as he denied him to attend the examination as he has not enough attendance.

However, defending the allegations, the vice chancellor of the university said, nothing can be said at this moment. Let the police to start its investigation after which all the facts about the suicide will come to fore.
