Cuttack: Police here on Thursday conducted a midnight raid on the houses of Congress workers and picked up several party activists in connection with the Purighat police station vandalism incident.

As per reports, police conducted a midnight raid on the houses of three Congress corporators and party's president of Cuttack Nagar Mohammed Moquim. Police have reportedly picked up as many as 20 Congress workers including the three corporators. Besides, police have arrested Moquim.

Meanwhile, Moquim has termed his arrest as politically motivated. He also alleged that police arrested him to settle scores.

On the other hand, Cuttack DCP Akhileshwar Singh today informed that a total of 17 Congress activists have been arrested out of the 24 detained party workers.

Addressing a presser, he further said Moquim and a woman corporator of the party have been arrested as as many as five and three cases are pending against them respectively.

On Moquim's arrest, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee chief Niranjan Patnaik said police has arrested him in a grudge. As court will remain close for some days, he was arrested.

"Had Moquim himself gone to the police station and ransacked it? Will an SP be booked for the mistake a constable does? If this is the case then I should also be booked for the mistake done by my party worker," said Patnaik.

Cuttack district president Gurupada Nanda said that Mohammed Moquim's arrest is politically motivated and if police delays release of Moquim, Congress will hit streets.

Earlier on September 11, a case was registered by police against Moquim and other Congress workers for allegedly ransacking Purighat PS.

The Congress had allegedly ransacked the Purighat PS and staged a road blockade protesting arrest of one of their members, who tried to barge into the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) office during the ‘Bharat Bandh’ observed by the party on September 10.
