Puri district is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus, Situated along the coast of Bay of Bengal in the state of Odisha. Puri is also known as Jagannath Puri. It is considered as one “Dhaam” among four holy “Dhaam” in India. The holy script of the Skanda Purana describes Puri as the resting place of Lord Vishnu. Apart from this Puri district is famous for its golden sea beach and black pagoda or sun temple of Konark. The famous heritage art village Raghurajpur is in this district, where artisans paint world famous Pattachitra painting. Puri Khaja, Khechuudi, Dalma has its own special flavor.
The notice has been issued citing non-cooperation by the Nijog with the SJTA to conduct the ritual on time. The Temple administration has directed the Nijog to reply within three days of time.
Pattnaik, who is also a member of the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee (SJTMC), wrote a letter in this connection to the Puri King Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb on Friday.
As per the Srimandir Record of Rights, the ritual should be held at least four times a month, but a reported dispute between the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) and the Dattamohapatra servitors has resulted in the disruption of the ritual.
The lady teacher, Priyadarshini Senapati, sustained serious injury in her head. She was immediately shifted to Balikuda hospital. It is learnt that Senapati was later shifted to Bhubaneswar for further treatment.
As per reports, it has been 17 days since the Niladri Bije, but the Banakalagi ritual which as per the rule book should have been conducted at least four times in a month, has not been conducted even once.
Sachetana Nagarika Mancha, a Citizen's Forum, has also launched a signature campaign to press for the demand in the pilgrim town.
While Lord Balabhadra will be adorned with ‘Nila Chita’, Lord Jagannath and Devi Subhadra will be decked up in diamond Chita and ‘Manikya Chita’ respectively.
The Forum will be collecting 1 lakh signatures from devotees in support of the reopening of the doors following which the demand letter carrying signatures will be submitted to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Ranjan Das on Thursday supported the Daitapati Nijog’s demand for dress code for devotees visiting the 12th-century shrine.
Secretary of the Nijog, Ramakrushna Dasmohapatra said, “A lot of devotees even enter the shrine and reach out to Lord Jagannath wearing half pants. A dress code should be made mandatory and the violators should be punished too.”
