In a shocking case of alleged dowry-related murder, a young woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband and mother-in-law over suspected dowry demand.
According to the allegation, Sujata Sahu, the daughter of Achhaba Sahu from Kalapadar village under Kanas block in Odisha's Puri district, was married to Sujit, the son of Ananta Majhi from Taila village. The father of the victim has alleged that his daughter was subjected to repeated harassment and torture over dowry demands after marriage.
He further alleged that the accused duo poured petrol on Sujata and set her on fire. As a result, she suffered nearly 80 per cent burn injuries. The critically injured woman was first admitted to a local hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Following the complaint filed at Gadisagoda Police Station, the police have detained the husband and mother-in-law for questioning. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
“They were married for six months on 19.06.2025. The boy worked in Mumbai and left after 8-10 days after their marriage, leaving the girl alone. Disturbances started between the couple after he returned home. He says he was sleeping when his wife was on fire. They took her immediately to MCA and then to SCB. I had visited the victim, but I could not record her statement due to her condition. Now, we have detained the woman’s husband and mother-in-law,” informed Gadisagoda IIC Sudhir Das.
