Public assault on Police inspector: 13 persons arrested

Balasore: As many as 13 persons were arrested today by police in connection with the attack on Inspector In-charge (IIC) of Baliapal Police Station, Prabhu Kalyan Acharya on June 26. The arrested persons are being interrogated and will be forwarded to the court later in the day, informed sources.

Earlier in the wee hours of Thursday, police conducted simultaneous raids at different places and detained 13 persons reportedly at Rupsa Police Station for interrogation. Later, following interrogation, police arrested the detained persons.

On June 26, a minor boy, Bijay Dalei from Uluda village was found hanging under mysterious condition at a dhaba near IDCO Chhak in Baliapal of Balasore district. Following the incident, tension erupted at the place as locals ransacked and torched the dhaba and the owner’s house. The angry locals and family members also thrashed Baliapal IIC, Acharya for allegedly arriving one hour late after being informed about the incident.

Following the incident, Acharya was transferred to Balasore Police Headquarters while Remuna IIC Ranjit Kumar Prustry was posted at Baliapal.

The State Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) is investigating the death of the minor boy on the direction of the Odisha Police DG.
