Protests by opposition mar local self-governance day celebrations in Cuttack
Cuttack: While the BJD-led state government celebrated the local self-governance day with fanfare across the State today, the protests by opposition parties- Congress and BJP marred the spirit of the celebrations in Cuttack.
A scuffle ensued between police and hundreds of Congress activists led by Cuttack Nagar Congress Committee president Mohammad Moquim today while they tried to damage the plaque of Clock Tower at Belleview square before its inauguration today.
Alleging delay in various developmental projects whose foundation stones were laid during the local self-governance day last year in Cuttack, the Congress workers said that such inaugurations by the BJD party are just a political gimmick and it should stop.
“We are staging protests in separate places in the city. Yesterday also, the members of the youth Congress took out a rally to create awareness about the failures of the ruling party. The agitation will be intensified,” said Moquim.
Later, after the protesting Congress activists were detained by the police, the Clock Tower was inaugurated by BJD’s Barabati-Cuttack MLA Debashish Samantaray. MP Anubhav Mohanty and Cuttack Mayor Meenakshi Behera were also present during the occasion.
BJP too staged a peaceful dharna in front of the CMC office to mark their boycott of ‘Swayat Sasan Divas’ celebrations of the BJD in Cuttack.
