Bhubaneswar: The skyrocketing price of potato has created tension among the city dwellers. Potato price suddenly moved north ward from Rs 6-7 a kilo to Rs 14-15 a kilo within a week.

The state government has swung into action after the issue rocked the assembly on Friday and has asked all district collectors to keep vigil on black marketing of potatoes. The district collectors were also directed to take legal action to prevent hoarding and black marketing of potatoes. The civil supply department officials were also alerted about this.

However, the wholesalers put the blame for the increase in the price of potatoes in city to hike in potato prices in West Bengal. The state government stressed on orderly distribution of existing stock of potatoes. The civil supply department claimed that steps have been taken to prevent artificial shortage of potato in the market by unscrupulous traders and black-marketing of the vegetable item.
