Berhampur: As many as 91 girl students had a close shave after a portion of the hostel complex inside Berhampur University caved in on Thursday.

The incident occurred at around 12 noon after the toilet block of Saberi girls' hostel collapsed. The incident triggered panic among the inmates who are now being shifted to other hostels of the university.

The students alleged that they had apprised the authorities that the water was leaking from the toilet and due to lack of repair work, cracks had also developed on the roof of the hostel.

"After we had submitted application regarding our complaints, the University officials had assured to take necessary repair works within two months. But unfortunately no steps were taken," said Subhashree Behera, secretary of Saberi Hostel.

Behera further stated that a major tragedy was averted as only two to three students were inside the hostel while others had gone to attend their classes when the incident occurred.

An official of the Berhampur University stated that "It is an unfortunate accident as the toilet block of the hostel caved in today. However, by God's grace no student was injured in the mishap."

Meanwhile, the development officer has been asked to conduct an inspection of other hostels and buildings so that necessary repair works can be undertaken at the earliest.
