Berhampur: The people who plan to gamble on 'Kumar Purnami Day', a festival of youth, today in the name of the tradition in Ganjam district, will face trouble as police warned to take stringent action against the gamblers.

"We'll not allow violation of law of the land in the name of tradition" said SP (Ganjam) Ashish Singh. Action would be taken against the gambler as per the law, he warned.

Police have already raided certain gambling dens at several places as it begins during the run-up to Dusshera and continues till Diwali in some places in the district.

"The raids will continue on gambling dens even on Kumar Purnami night," police said adding that people believed that prosperity could be achieved through gambling on the Laxmi Puja day.

Even parents asked their children to go and gamble on Kumar Purnami. "Many people believe the Goddess Laxmi can be invoked only through gambling on this day and go for gambling wearing new clothes," said a retired professor in Berhampur University.

Police had already booked over 350 gamblersduring one month, while cracked 70 gambling points. Cash over Rs 6 lakh were seized from the gambling points during the period.
