Bhubaneswar: In an effort to prevent the overstaying of foreigners in the State capital after expiry of their visa, the commissionerate police will track their movement online through Immigration, Visa and Foreigners Registration & Tracking (IVFRT) system which was launched on a pilot basis here on Wednesday.

The system, officials said, facilitates foreigners to register their details including information about visa with the police once they stay in the city. Besides, their period of stay, place of accommodation etc. can directly be registered in the system. The foreign nationals can also extend their visa period by going through proper procedure in the system, officials added.

Now the hoteliers, lodge owners, accommodation facilitators and others who provide service the foreign nationals as paying guests can send their details online to the police to keep records about the travellers.

Officials said, the ministry of home affairs has identified Bhubaneswar among 60 other Indian cities in eight states for online registration of foreign tourists in 2013-14.
According to officials involved in the implementation of the project, the government is planning to extend the project to Puri that witnesses the maximum footfall of foreign tourists in the State.

Unconfirmed figures show, nearly 67,000 foreign tourists visited Puri last year and there were instances in the past where police came across some foreigners illegally overstaying in the temple town.
