Cuttack: Cuttack city police on Sunday intercepted five trucks that were carrying as many as 500 cattle illegally and in a dangerous manner.

The cattle were let off in a jungle near Choudwar while police are investigating the matter after detaining five persons in this connection.

The police after getting a tip-off intercepted the trucks near Sikharpur Square of the city on NH 5, sources said.

"We have detained five persons for allegedly transporting the cattle illegally and in a dangerous way. The investigations are on," said city DCP S Praveen Kumar adding the cattle were let off in a nearby jungle.

The incident, however, sparked tension as Go-Surakhya Samiti members accompanied by several local BJP leaders protested about the repeated transportation of cattle and alleged that the policemen were turning out to be silent spectators.

The protestors blocked traffic on the national highway for nearly one hour demanding stringent action against the culprits and arresting the main accused in such illegal trade.
