Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and BJP national vice president Baijayant Panda and other eminent political leaders greeted the people of Odisha on the occasion of Odia New Year, also celebrated as "Maha Vishuba Sankranti".

“This Maha Vishuba Sankranti may all your wishes come true. Praying for everyone’s well-being and happiness,” tweeted Prime Minister.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik also took to twitter to wish the people on the occasion of 'Vishuba Sankranti' and wrote, "I pray that the New Year brings happiness and prosperity to all with the blessings of Lord Jagannath."

As the day is also celebrated as “Pana Sankranti, devotees across the state today thronged various temple to perform special puja. Special rituals were performed at Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri with recitation of the new Odia almanac (Panji) before the Holy trinity.

Maha Visuba Sankranti also marks the end of ‘Jhamu Yatra’.  It is believed that all the wishes of devotes, who walk on burning charcols and thorns, get fulfilled during the Jhamu Yatra.

Devotees also were seen making a beeline in front of temples in the city to pay obeisance to Lord Hanuman on the occasion of the Hanuman Jayanti today. In Sambalpur Hanuman Jayanti is being celebrated in a unique way with ‘Akhada’ processions being taken out from different places in city.

In Rourkela, tight security arrangements have also been made for the Ram Navami procession.
