Pipili gang rape & murder: Crime Branch moves HC challenging acquittal of accused

Bhubaneswar: After drawing a lot of flak over its investigation as the accused in Pipili gang rape and murder case were acquitted, the Odisha Crime Branch challenged the lower court verdict in Orissa High Court today.

There was widespread public outrage after the Bhubaneswar Additional District Judge acquitted prime accused Prashant Pradhan and his brother Sukant on December 24, 2018 due to lack of evidence against them. Soon after the verdict, questions were raised over the competency of the Crime Branch to investigate and build a strong case against the accused in such a sensitive case.

It is pertinent to mention that the victim, a 19 year-old girl from Arjungoda of Pipili in Puri district was rescued in an unconscious state on November 29, 2011 after being allegedly gang raped a day ago. After remaining in comatose state for over six months, the girl had died at SCB hospital in Cuttack in June 2012.
