Puri: Fishermen living on the seaside of the pilgrim city of Puri have been busy with an odd job these days – searching for gold on the beach. After the waves recede, the fishermen start scouring the wet sand for gold flakes.

It is said that this search for gold has begun after Cyclone Fani hit Puri on May 3 as some fishermen reportedly found gold earrings and other small pieces of the yellow metal from the beach.

It is believed that the recovered gold could be those which are offered to the sea by devotees in Puri. Usually while performing ‘Shraddha’ rituals in front of Swarga Dwara, the Sabat Nijog offers gold to the sea. As per the belief, offering gold during the rituals brings good fortune.
